Due to its non-contact nature, this technology significantly improves patient comfort and paves the way to many new applications. Contrary to traditional neuroimaging methods which infer statistical properties at the level of a group of individuals, these new engineering methods allow studying brain function at the individual level, and hence offer promises for patient diagnosis and prognosis. Repeated and prolonged reduction in blood flow causes proliferation and migration of excessive smooth muscle cells leading to the phenomenon of intimal arterial hyperplasia.
